Barnacre With Bonds

Across the River Wyre to the south of Garstang is the Civil Parish of Bonds with Barnacre which includes Bonds, Bowgreave, Barnacre and Calder Vale, quite a large spread out area.

The Catholic Church of SS Mary and Michael is at Bonds, the primary school attached to the church and the pub, the Church Inn.

At Bowgreave we have the old Police station. The former Garstang High School now known as Garstang Community Academy the eighteen hole pay and play golf course and the Great Western Hotel, Garstang Hotel and Golf.

Barnacre weighs in with the old creamery industrial estate near the former Garstang and Catterall railway station and the Kenlis Arms Hotel, the local church is All Saints Church in Delph Lane Barnacre.

The kenlis Arms is home to the areas premier music team, Garstang Unplugged, who promote live entertainment with a regular monthly open mike evening throughout the year and top British, American and European acts during the summer. Events are listed in the Garstang website for the month ahead.

Up the hill to the Trough of Bowland is Calder Vale in which the Mill. Lappet Mill is still in use as a cotton mill to this day. The mill is the sole reason for the village being here, before the mill there was no village. The mill was built to take advantage of the water power from the river Calder.

In the village is the Methodist Church and about a half a mile north of the village Is the Church of England St Johns Church and St Johns primary school. This was built between Calder Vale and Oakenclough to serve both communities.

There is no pub in Calder Vale as the mill owners wanted a sober workforce although theses days there is a social club.

Calder Vale village and mill is a conservation area.

The Parish Council notice board is alongside the Garstang road at Bonds opposite the Church Inn by the bus stop. There was no up to date information on the notice board when I looked in September (in December the window is broken).
