Garstang is a small market town in North Lancashire (pop c 4,000) mid way between Preston and Lancaster.
Thursday is Garstang street market day when stalls line the High Street, market traders coming from far and wide to offer a good range of well priced goods. The Market Hall has first class local and other cheeses, top class butchers, fruit and vegetables and confectionary, have a look you will not be disapointed. People from the surrounding villages meet in Garstang on Thursdays.
The town is situated on the historic Preston to Lancaster road, the river Wyre and the Lancaster Canal.
The A6 bypasses Garstang, Catterall and Cabus. The M6 motorway is close by as is the main West Coast Railway link between Scotland and England.
Garstang, Forton, the Wyre Estuary and coast is a magnet for walkers and cyclists many of whom can be seen around town all year round but particularly in the summer, when a walk through the beautiful countryside is enjoyed by many.
The area is the centre of Lancashire cheese production, the relatively high precipitation and mild climate producing rich pastures on which to graze the herds that produce the high quality milk that is a necessary ingredient of the finest quality cheese. Visitors should certainly try a taste of our very own Garstang Blue cheese.
A quick stroll up Garstang high street from the playing fields car park and we pass the Crown on our left, then the Kings Head and Eagle and Child on our right before arriving at the Market Cross, which is in front of the Royal Oak.
Go to the right down Church street and at the crossroads the Farmers Arms, closed January 2008, is opposite. Th Aud Tithe Barn, which is the Old Tythe Barn converted to a pub, straight on past St Thomas Church on the left. Turn right at the crossroads and then right again and the Wheatsheaf is on our left.
From the Market Cross go to the left down the hill over the river Wyre and the Church Inn is on the left.
The Flag, currently closed, and Crofters which has recently been sold by Mitchells, both on the A6, complete the tour of Garstang hostelries. The Flag is actualy in Nateby parish and Crofters is in Cabus and while I think of it the Church Inn is accross the river Wyre and therefore in Bonds.
Near by we have the Kenlis Arms Hotel at Barnacre, the Patten Arms at Winmarleigh, the Manor Inn at Cockerham, Ellotsons Arms at Stake Pool, The White Bull at Bilsborrow, The Priory at Scorton and Garstang Golf and Country Club at Bowgreave.
The brewery owning the Flag are currently seeking a new tennant, the Farmers Arms closed in January 2008 and has been undergoing refurbishment to re open as an Italian Restaurant although work seems to have stopped.
I shall add photos and more pubs shortly, come back and check. Check out our list of Pubs in Garstang and around.
