Garstang In Bloom
Scooping the Gold award in the prestigious Entente Florale competition in 2008 was a well earned highlight for Garstang in Bloom who, not resting on their laurels, continue to exceed the high standards demanded by the panel of European judges.
For Garstang in Bloom to consistently deliver at this level requires excellence in many categories including the local environment, impact upon tourism and community participation as well as the flora and vegetation.
Garstang in Bloom are well practised in this, it did not all start in 2008, but almost a quarter of a century earlier in 1987, getting off to a quick start Garstang in Bloom have been bringing in the accolades since 1990 regularly scooping gold medals, certificates and accolades from both the local North West In Bloom and the national competition Britain In Bloom and latterly the European Entente Florale.
The hard work of Garstang in Bloom can be shared and celebrated by the whole Garstang community who every year are treated to a riot of colour in the flower beds and presentations all around our beautiful town this certainly helps to make Garstang a lovely place to live, work and visit.
With active participation from schools and local businesses and support from WBC and commercial sponsors these award recognise the community involvement but nothing would happen without the leadership from Garstang In Bloom whose chairman Norah Hoyles MBE received a special individual Royal Horticultural Society award in 2010 for Community Championing.
Winning gold again in the 2010 Britain In Bloom puts Garstang In Bloom into the premier national competition in 2011, Champion Of Champions where having been pipped at the post twice before Garstang In Bloom will be pulling out all the stops to bring this one back to Garstang.
This will entail the whole Garstang community pulling together, everyone can contribute, from the tots in playgroups, through the schools and voluntary organisations and indeed individual residents.
People get involved because they are proud of Garstang and the publicity that goes along with winning these plaudits shows the world what a wonderful place Garstang is.
Awards or no awards though it raises the spirits seeing the wonderful floral displays around Garstang as we go about our normal daily lives. We can thank the volunteers of Garstang In Bloom for that.
If you would like to help you can support the many fund raising events that take place around Garstang throughout the year or volunteer to join the team at the sharp end.
