Garstang Millennium Green

Garstang Millennium Green now over ten years old has undergone a major maintenance and refurbishment project carried out by volunteers from the friends of Garstang Millennium Green.

The wonderful Garstang Millennium Green a community amenity stretching north along the west bank of the river Wyre from Garstang playing fields to Wyre Lane has served visitors and Garstang residents well over the last ten years but wear and tear, and the ravages of the weather, had taken their toll and action was needed. The volunteers have been working on this for the last three years and now we can see the results of all their hard work.

Following a less than flattering letter to the editor in the Garstang Courier where the writer likened the finished Garstang Millennium Green as looking like a city park and not the wildlife haven it has always been I thought it time too get down and take a look.

Approaching the Garstang Millennium Green from the playing field entrance the first thing to notice is that the newly mended path stands out bright and level and the whole area looks neat and tidy.

The path is now nice and flat and will be a boon to those who are less fleet of foot than others and the area can now be accessed by wheelchair users and even the electric mobility scooters that are becoming more common.

Walking on towards the main area of Garstang Millennium Green and the family area, dog free and ideal for picnics, is off to the left just before heading through to the main field and the hand statue, leaving this field and moving into the next field the gate has gone everything has been tidied up and the lovely new path continues around the second field, River Wyre access remains and the bat boxes are visible. This is still an enjoyable Garstang walk or a place to sit and contemplate.

My view on this is that the work has been excellent, the character of the Garstang Millennium Green is unchanged and it is nothing like a city park. I understand that tapping boards are to be installed along the pathways to assist the visual impaired and I think that is an excellent idea, the Garstang Millennium Green remains a haven for wildlife and is now able to be enjoyed by more Garstang visitors and residents than ever before.

Well done the volunteers. Fundraising events for the upkeep of the Garstang Millennium Green are regularly being arranged, visit the Garstang website regularly to keep up with events.
