Garstang Tour
A Tour of Garstang High Street Hostelries.
Garstang is known for its diverse range of Garstang Pubs Once boasting some fifteen hostelries we now have considerably fewer but still a good number by present day standards, and they are all worth a visit.
A quick stroll up Garstang High Street from the playing fields car park, leaving the car park to our right over the mini roundabout we can see the Old Grammar School which now houses Garstang Arts centre. Turning left into the high street, the Co Op and Post office are across the road then we pass the Crown on our left, opposite the crown is the oldest cottage in the High Street, further on the Kings Head and Eagle and Child on our right, opposite the Kings head is the site of the old Packhorse Hotel with a blue heritage sign on it.
Opposite the Eagle and Child and on our left is the Market House, then the Old Town Hall which is now a Royal British Legion Club.
Now we arrive at the Market Cross, which is in front of the Royal Oak hotel, the only hotel in Garstang.
Go to the right down Church street and at the mini roundabout crossroads the old Farmers Arms, now an Italian restaurant Salvatores is across the road.
Turn right here and we pass Dante and Chicos Place, takeaways on our right then turn right again and the Wheatsheaf is on our left.
Back to the mini roundabout and if we continue straight on along Church Street past Salvatores St Thomas’s Church is on our left and then we come to Th Aud Tithe Barn, which is the Old Tythe Barn converted to a pub in the early nineteen seventies but built in the sixteenth century.
Back now to the Market Cross and the third exit is Bridge Street go down the hill over the river Wyre and the Church Inn is on the left.
The Flag on the A6, currently being refurbished and re named The Bellflower is undergoing extensive renovations and will re open as a family friendly two for one meals pub very soon and Crofters Hotel a little further north on the A6, complete the tour of Garstang hostelries. The Flag is actually in Nateby parish and Crofters is in Cabus and while I think of it the Church Inn is across the river Wyre and therefore in Bonds.
Near by we have the Kenlis Arms Hotel at Barnacre, the Patten Arms at Winmarleigh, the Manor Inn at Cockerham, Ellotsons Arms at Stake Pool, The White Bull and Roebuck at Bilsborrow, The Priory at Scorton and Garstang Golf and Country Club at Bowgreave.
I shall add photos and more pubs shortly, come back and check.
