Garstang Town Council

How Independent is Garstang Town Council?

Garstang Town Council represents the first tier of government and administration in the English system of government.

The members of the council are elected using the tried and tested first past the post system whereby the candidates with the most votes are elected. The elected representatives then represent the interests of all voters including those that voted against them. This level of government have little power but can bring pressure to bear on the Wyre Borough Council who represent the next level of government along with the Lancashire County Council who have overlapping responsibilities.

England, unlike Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland has no representation at national level.

Currently we have no access to reliable Garstang Town Council information and meetings minutes online as the only source we have so far identified is sporadic publication on the Garstang and District Chamber Of Trade website, this organisation is specifically set up as a lobby group to further the interests of its members and influencing the council is one of its core aims as defined in its mission statement, clearly not a reliable source for information on the councils working.

A request has been sent to Garstang Town council for a copy of the minutes and any relevant notices to be sent to us at Garstang.org for publication on the World Wide Web.

Six weeks and two council meetings have now passed with no response yet from Garstang Town Council. Perhaps they are awaiting instructions from Garstang Chamber of Trade as to what they should do.
